PostgreSQL Developer
Key Responsibilities
1. Database Design & Architecture
- Design and develop Relational Database Management Systems (RDBMS) using PostgreSQL.
- Design database schemas, tables, relationships, constraints, and data models.
- Create appropriate Primary Keys, Foreign Keys, Unique Constraints, Check Constraints, and other database objects.
- Understand and implement normalization and denormalization where appropriate.
- Design databases that are scalable, maintainable, and optimized for application requirements.
- Participate in database architecture and schema design discussions with development teams.
2. SQL & PL/pgSQL Development
- Write complex and optimized SQL queries.
- Develop PL/pgSQL functions, procedures, triggers, and views.
- Work with:
- Joins
- Subqueries
- CTEs
- Window Functions
- Aggregate Functions
- Temporary Tables
- Common Table Expressions
- Develop queries for reporting, transactional processing, and application requirements.
- Handle data migration and data transformation requirements.
3. Query Optimization & Performance Tuning
- Analyze and optimize slow-running SQL queries.
- Use EXPLAIN and EXPLAIN ANALYZE to identify query performance bottlenecks.
- Identify inefficient joins, sequential scans, excessive sorting, and other performance issues.
- Optimize queries, functions, and database structures for better response time.
- Monitor database performance and proactively identify potential issues.
4. Indexing
- Design and implement appropriate database indexes.
- Understand and work with:
- B-Tree indexes
- Composite indexes
- Partial indexes
- Unique indexes
- Expression indexes
- GIN/GiST indexes – basic understanding
- Analyze existing indexes and identify unnecessary or missing indexes.
- Optimize indexing strategies based on application query patterns.
- Understand the impact of indexes on INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE, and storage.
5. Database Development
- Create and maintain:
- Tables
- Views
- Functions
- Procedures
- Triggers
- Sequences
- Indexes
- Constraints
- Implement appropriate transaction handling.
- Ensure data consistency and integrity.
- Work with large datasets and understand database performance considerations.
6. Database Maintenance & Support
- Troubleshoot database-related issues in development, testing, and production environments.
- Monitor database health and performance.
- Assist with database backup and restore activities.
- Support database deployment and schema changes.
- Investigate locking, blocking, deadlocks, and long-running queries.
- Maintain database scripts and migration scripts using version control.
7. Collaboration with Development Team
- Work closely with .NET / Backend and Frontend Developers to understand application requirements.
- Translate business requirements into efficient database structures and queries.
- Review SQL code written by developers and suggest performance improvements.
- Help developers troubleshoot database-related application issues.
- Follow coding standards and database development best practices.
Required Technical Skills
- 1–2 years of hands-on experience with PostgreSQL
- Strong knowledge of SQL
- Good understanding of PL/pgSQL
- Strong understanding of RDBMS concepts
- Experience with database schema and relational data modeling

- Understanding of connection pooling
- Experience with pgAdmin / DBeaver
- Basic knowledge of PostgreSQL monitoring and performance tools
- Experience with AWS / Cloud databases, particularly Amazon RDS for PostgreSQL
- Knowledge of database migration tools and CI/CD deployment practices

Education
B.E. / B.Tech / MCA / BCA / equivalent qualification in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
Experience
1–2 years of professional experience in PostgreSQL / Database Development.
Preferred Exposure
Experience working on business applications, ERP, healthcare/HMS, financial systems, or other transaction-heavy applications will be an advantage.
